Good crowd attends Artists for Abundance opening

Pictured are all of the prize winners at the 2011 Spring Exhibition of the Northstar Watercolor Society. The show was a fundraiser for Second Harvest Heartland, and the donations exceeded the organizers’ expectations!

Noelle Dahlen received one of the two third place ribbons for “Songbird.” Her Tweet: “I'm inspired by the shapes of birds and the negative spaces created by branches.”

The Northstar sponsored 12x12 art show reception was held March 3rd at the Northrup King Building. It was an exciting atmosphere as one entered the studio.  The 50+ paintings entered from Northstar members was a wonderful niche in the expansive gallery.  Calvin deRuyter was the judge for the show.

Calvin said that his criteria took on 3 phases:  1) Overall impression of the painting, which 'pulls' at him on first go through;  2) Looking at individual paintings he assesses design, color, form, and shape;  3)  The story that the painting is telling that makes him want to come back and look again.

Nancy Patrick Carney’s "Family at Bus Stop" received top honors at the Spring Exhibition. Nancy’s Tweet stated: “This is from my ‘Bus Stop’ series - a young family, keeping their baby daughter warm on a cold day in St. Paul.”

Sharon Peterson received second place for her painting "Mindset." Her Tweet stated: “This young lady is next up at the rodeo. She is reaching down for her inner strength to execute a winning performance.”
